Spectacle, a major solo exhibition by artist Jude Wainwright, presents a new collection of works - a terminal shift in their practice. Far from Judopia, the world of Jude that sits between reality and dreamland, Spectacle brings The Whitaker’s own collection to life!

Part specter, part spectacle, Jude’s self portraits have taken to haunting the corridors of the gallery - working in response to The Whitaker’s extensive archival collection. Inhabiting and reshaping her work. Like a travelling circus parade, the Jude figures have gathered at the Whitaker for some much needed Spectacle.

Through self portraits and object-based works, Jude’s work weaves together personal narratives with cultural artefacts, creating a space where the past and present collide. Her portraits are often veiled, layered with symbols that invite viewers to look closer, questioning what lies beneath; how do we choose to present ourselves to the world?

This is a spectacle in the making! Venture forth, the circus awaits.

Jude Wainwright is an award-winning artist based in Manchester and Studio Manager at AWOL Studios, Hope Mill. Her practice centres on surreal self-portraiture, using layered symbolism and storytelling to explore identity, memory and the performance of the self. Often drawing on historical references and personal experience, her work balances intimacy with a dreamlike sense of theatre. She has exhibited in galleries across the UK, with Spectacle marking her most ambitious solo exhibition to date.
